Research paper, one handwritten and one typed, on Joseph Smith's candidacy for president of the United States, written while obtaining his B.A. from Iowa State University. Discusses the political activities in the state, those active in politics and how the Mormons, specifically Joseph Smith, fit into politics of the time. The article was published in fourteen installments in the "Hancock County Journal". Several other articles on Joseph Smith and the Mormons, research material used in writing the articles and correspondence re: the articles. Book review of "Children of God" by Vardis Fisher, a book on Mormonism that Van Dine found to be "a prostitution of literature" and "ought to be dynamited."

Letter written by Hyrum Smith and signed for Joseph Smith from Nauvoo, Illinois, to Oliver Granger. Smith writes of a Mr. Devenport from New York who brought a judgement in favor of Boynton & Hyde, and urges Granger to pay the "just" debt. He also writes of the deaths of D.C. Smith and Robert B. Thompson from "quick consumption", mentions Brother Phelps and Hiram Kimball, and describes drought conditions.
